At-Turaif UNESCO World Heritage Site Since 2010

Diriyah’s At-Turaif UNESCO World Heritage Site is a symbol of Saudi Arabia’s rich history and a sanctuary for national heritage preserved in open-air museums. Salwa palace is the largest standing structure in the citadel and of significant importance as the home of Kings & Heroes.

The city of At-Turaif was built with adobe mud and other natural materials in the 1700s and features courtyards, alleyways and towers that showcase quintessential Najdi architecture and tell the story of a traditional Saudi way of life. Under UNESCO guidelines, the mud-brick city has been restored to exhibit materials and artifacts from the Kingdom’s Royal, social and cultural past, taking visitors on a comprehensive journey through Saudi history.

We have developed cultural and entertainment experiences that reflect traditions, the hospitality of its people and create a gathering place for all.

The Importance of Diriyah

In 1446, Diriyah was established on the Hanifa Valley banks and became the capital of the First Saudi State in 1727. Representing a turning point in the Arabian Peninsula's history, notably the Arab and Islamic world found stability and prosperity. It united most of the Arabian Peninsula region under one state, ending fragmentation, rivalry, and insecurity.

In the heart of The Arabian Peninsula, Diriyah became a destination for trade, culture, knowledge, communication, and economic exchange. Diriyah was also a hub for trade and pilgrimage routes to different regions. Despite the complex desert environment, Diriyah became an oasis for the model society, and this provided it with peace, prosperity and the vision of the state based on sublime principles have given it a prominent political, economic, military, and religious place in the region, until it became a beacon of knowledge and education.

Diriyah's past is rich and full of heroic and essential moments, which began from the migration of Mani' Al-Muraydi in the 15th century to establish Diriyah, to the establishment of the First Saudi State in the beginning of the 18th century. As the cradle of the Saudi state, Diriyah is a beacon of the continuing legacy of the Royal Family (Al Saud) and its historic role in establishing stability and bringing prosperity with citizens' participation throughout the country. A significant title to celebrate the achievements reached from the time of Imam Mohammed bin Saud to the reign of King Salman bin Abdul Aziz today.
